Two paths to becoming an ADI
Whether you are starting from scratch or hold a foreign qualification, there is a route for you.
The full RSA exam route
Complete all three qualification stages in the required order to become a registered ADI.
Stage 1 — theory test. Free RSA materials and structured practice are usually enough, so most candidates do not need a paid course.
Stage 2 — practical driving test. An advanced 19-category driving assessment where most candidates take professional one-to-one in-car training before testing.
Stage 3 — instruction ability test. Two 30-minute teaching assessments where professional in-car training helps most candidates prepare for the examination.

Foreign qualification exemptions
If you hold an equivalent overseas driving instructor qualification, you may be eligible for exemptions from some or all RSA exam stages:
Assessed case-by-case. The RSA reviews every application individually to determine whether your existing qualifications meet Irish standards.
Partial or full exemptions. Depending on your qualifications, the RSA may exempt you from some or all examination stages.
Remaining stages as normal. Any stages not exempted must be completed through the standard RSA qualification process before registration.

Yes. Holders of equivalent foreign qualifications may receive partial or full exemptions from some or all RSA exam stages. Exemptions are assessed case-by-case by the RSA — apply with evidence of your qualification, and complete any remaining stages the standard way.
Stage 1 is computer-based and available at 41 test centres across Ireland. Stages 2 and 3 run at 13 centres: Athlone, Cork, Dundalk, Finglas, Galway, Kilkenny, Letterkenny, Limerick, Mullingar, Rathgar, Sligo, Tralee and Waterford. Confirm current centres and availability at rsa.ie.
Once you have passed all three stages and met the RSA’s requirements, you can apply to join the ADI register by paying the registration fee. After your application is approved, you are legally allowed to charge for driving instruction in Ireland as a registered ADI.
