The full RSA exam route
Complete all three stages in order:
Stage 1 — theory test. Well suited to self-study: free RSA materials plus structured question practice cover the syllabus, so there’s no need to pay for a course at this stage.
Stage 2 — practical driving test. A 19-category assessment at an advanced level. Most candidates take professional one-to-one in-car training for this stage.
Stage 3 — instruction ability test. Two 30-minute phases testing how you teach a beginner and a near-test-ready pupil. In-car training is common here too.
You’ll need tax compliance, a full driving licence held 2+ years, and Garda vetting before you can begin. Check the requirements or read the full qualification guide.
Foreign qualification exemptions
If you hold an equivalent overseas driving instructor qualification, you may be eligible for exemptions from some or all RSA exam stages:
Assessed case-by-case. The RSA reviews each application individually against the Irish qualification standard.
Partial or full exemptions. Depending on your qualification, you may skip some or all of the RSA exam stages.
Remaining stages as normal. Any stages not exempted are completed the same way as the standard route.
