Becoming an Approved Driving Instructor starts with meeting the RSA's eligibility criteria.
To become an ADI in Ireland you need a full driving licence held for at least 2 years, tax compliance with Revenue, Irish residency with a valid PPSN, Garda vetting clearance, and good character with no serious convictions. The Five Eligibility Requirements
The RSA sets five mandatory requirements for anyone wishing to become an Approved Driving Instructor in Ireland.
Full driving licence
Held for at least 2 years in the category you wish to teach — Category B for cars, Category A for motorcycles. A mandatory RSA requirement with no exceptions.
Irish residency
You must be normally resident in Ireland with a valid address and PPSN. Irish citizenship is not required — residency is.
Garda vetting
Vetting through the National Vetting Bureau, with in-person presentation of a completed NVB1 consent form to an RSA validation officer.

The Three-Stage Examination
Meet the eligibility requirements, and a three-stage examination stands between you and the register.
Theory test
A computer-based multiple-choice exam covering road rules, teaching methodology and road safety, held at 41 Prometric test centres.
Practical driving test
An on-road driving assessment covering 19 test categories, conducted at 13 designated RSA test centres across Ireland.
Instruction ability test
A practical assessment of your teaching skills through two 30-minute instructional phases at the same 13 RSA test centres.
Motorcycle note: Category A (motorcycle) ADI tests are reported as restricted to four centres only — Finglas, Limerick, Sligo and Waterford.
Foreign Exemptions
Already qualified as a driving instructor abroad? You may not need to start from scratch.
Holders of equivalent foreign driving instructor qualifications may receive partial or full exemptions from some or all stages of the ADI examination. Whether an exemption applies depends on the qualification held and the country where it was gained — in many cases an existing qualification effectively acts as credit toward the Irish ADI qualification rather than replacing it outright.

A criminal record does not automatically bar you — the RSA assesses each case individually.
